The yearend festive time is about to kick off! November brings in a busy period for us at Jetwing. The high season begins with many visitors from all over the world wanting to spend their well earned vacation in our beautiful Island. Having travelled to Arugambay and Yala last week, I was reminded once again of the breathtaking beauty of Sri Lanka: a short trip on the Southern Highway, then onto Ratnapura, Balangoda, Wellawaya, and on to Pottuvil/Arugambay and an overnight at Kottukal Beach House by Jetwing in Pottuvil! The scenery on the way passing the Diyaluma Falls and the likes is simply amazing. Kottukal Beach House is wonderfully located by a bay in Pottuvil and has some fabulous views of the Indian Ocean from every angle. The four-bedroom property has comforts and luxury armed with a fabulous and friendly team assuring the best services to the guests. Even if you are not an avid surfer or a beach bum there is plenty to do in this part of the country.

Then, we journeyed on to Yala to visit our newest addition, the soon to be opened Jetwing Yala! What a surprise, I do not wish to steal any of the thunder from the planned opening, but if I am to share my personal views and a sneak preview, this property even in its current “not ready yet” state left me speechless for quite a while. It is truly something you will not expect to see in Yala. It is Jetwing bringing its own brand of luxurious hospitality to the wild. The deep south of Sri Lanka will never be the same again. It will have a delightful Jetwing property where you can do much more than simply go for a safari at the Yala National Park. We are ready to keep you much longer, at least 4 to 5 days. There is a lovely spa for those who want to be pampered, a state of the art gym for those who want to stay healthy, fabulous food and beverages for the discerning traveller all served in true Jetwing style. The pool is so lovely I am waiting impatiently to take a dip. There is so much else to do in the area and we will share these with you soon. I sincerely hope all of you will be able to visit us at Yala.

We are also introducing another 22 rooms at Jetwing Lighthouse in Galle. These are scheduled to be opened by mid December. We are also planning new dining experiences in Galle. My colleagues at Travels are busy putting all these different elements at Jetwing and all other great properties in the country and the fabulous new experiences that are being developed by very creative individuals so that our guests will have the best of Sri Lanka. It is truly an exciting time. The Colombo city is being spruced up for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) to be held in early November. The Viharamahadevi Park is getting such a transformation and I am so looking forward to seeing the finished product. The new paved walkways, the centre isles the new plants will all add to the beauty of this bustling city.

In year 2007 the exciting news broke that migratory whales were passing through Sri Lankan waters. Mirissa, in the Deep South and Kalpitiya on the western coastal belt, rank at the world’s top locations for spotting and photographing Blue whales and Sperm whales with sightings occurring between the months of April to November. Unlike in other parts of the world where you have to travel far out into the sea to spot Blue whales, the close proximity of the continental shelf to Mirissa enables half-day excursions to the ocean, where the Blues can be seen just a few nautical miles out from the land.
