“Life is not fair get used to it” was a quote from Bill Gates. How true this is, in the context of our tourism industry today.

Life seemed so good for more than a million Sri Lankans who were benefiting from the increased number of foreign visitors to our shores. Thanks to many of you, we had increased year on year and all sectors from the informal to formal were thriving. They took loans and expanded their thriving businesses, and then suddenly, with absolutely no warning terror struck.

This impacted many livelihoods, from the tuk driver to the fruit seller to the widow who was making a living renting her spare room to the larger companies with big teams and high overheads. Well, as Mr. Gates says, we have to get used to it, we have to overcome it. And I must say, thankfully we have. With all your support and the indomitable human spirit, we are moving forward as a country, as a nation. At Jetwing, we took stock and our teams at both Travels and Hotels rallied together and faced the avalanche of cancellations we received in the 3 weeks after 21/4. It was heartbreaking, depressing and made us feel “it’s so unfair”. However, thankfully, many didn’t cancel their trip and as soon as their respective countries lifted the travel bans, they reconfirmed their travel. We are grateful to them, thank you. To those of you who have been our constant strength and support, our Tour Operator partners, we have no words to let you know how much we appreciate your support. All of you put Sri Lanka back on sale after the governments allowed you to, and are promoting our little Island.

Sri Lanka is still breathtakingly beautiful, our culture and history remain strong and our quirky Sri Lankan people are even more hospitable.
