Dear Friends,

Every full moon (usually once a month) is a public holiday in Sri Lanka. Each of the full moons has their own name and they are days to commemorate key events in Buddhism. These full moon days are known as Poya. The Poya dates will change each year and certain Poya dates may be a day before or after the date of the full moon. The sale and consumption of alcohol is prohibited on Poya days, but guests at hotels can do so in the privacy of their rooms. The Poya in September is called Binara. It commemorates the establishment of the Buddhist Bikkuni order.

Whenever the Poya day falls on a Friday or a Monday (as it does too frequently) Sri Lankans start their travels. From pilgrimages to pure indulgence, we love our days off. The September long weekend with the Poya on Friday saw many locals hiring buses and cramming in as many adults and children as they could for travel. Most would visit Anuradhapura, Kandy, Katharagama, Bellanvila, Munnesweram etc. as many temples are housed in these places. They will have their belongings which of course include their clothing, the mats for sleeping and even utensils and provisions for cooking all nicely stacked up on the roofs of the buses. Often they have coconut flowers stuck in the front of the bus to indicate they are on a pilgrimage. It’s a time for fun, especially for the young and you will hear them singing away. Of course en route they will visit popular places of interest, such as Sigiriya, Dambulla, Peradeniya Botanical gardens, Dehiwela Zoo, Wilpattu and Yala National Park to name a few. Of course whenever they spot a river, they will jump in to cool their warm bodies. So, if you happen to be around one of these Poya days in Sri Lanka, you will be privileged to see us enjoying the simple pleasures of life and don’t be surprised if you are invited to join in.

Of course you have another set of locals who will want to experience the luxuries and patronize the many beautiful Hotels and villas that Sri Lanka now offers. Most Hotels usually get filled up at such times.

Other than that, we have all been rather busy as we have had many visitors wanting us to take them around our Island home. These are exciting times as many new experiences are being developed and we can make our guests experience them. Jetwing is eagerly looking forward to the completion and the opening of 2 of our properties in Colombo (Jetwing Colombo 7) and Dambulla (Jetwing Lake). We hope we can welcome you there!

With Warm Greetings,
