Dear Friends,

After months of clear blue skies, glorious sunshine and unsympathetic heat, the south western monsoon ravaged certain parts of Sri Lanka mercilessly in May/June this year. The rain that fell within a short period of time to a particular area is said to be more than what some countries receive in an entire year. This was accompanied by strong winds, which is never a good combination and it resulted in floods in certain areas of the country. Many people were displaced and about 200 people lost their lives sadly. The situation was quickly brought under control and the outpouring assistance was very heartening. The usual tourist routes were not disrupted and with a few minor detours the tourist industry carried on. We are still having intermittent rain as is usual at this time of the year and by July the rain is expected to cease heralding the dry season. Selfishly, I love this time of the year, as it gets a little cooler and the cloud cover makes my morning walks more pleasant.

The Poya day in the month of May (Vesak) is when the birth, death and enlightenment of Lord Buddha is celebrated. It is a hive of activity in Sri Lanka. There are many pandols that are set up depicting various aspects of Buddha’s life and other “Jathaka” stories. These are illuminated in bright colored lights and the story is narrated to the large number of people who gather around them. Most houses hang beautifully made Vesak lanterns and Buddhist flags and most areas, especially Colombo, along the Beira Lake and the Gangaramaya Temple assume a very festive air. There are also those devotees that organize “Dansals”, basically “alms” where they give away various food and beverage items free to anyone who cares to stop. Of course all this means that the road trips get somewhat delayed and it is advisable to leave some extra time to accommodate it.

We at Jetwing were happy to see Jie Jie Beach by Jetwing officially opened in early June. This is a lovely property in Panadura, right on the beach. It is approximately an hour away from Colombo, so the 180 rooms and the spacious conference hall and break rooms make it an ideal venue for a beach holiday, a conference, wedding etc. etc. The Conference area has a separate entrance and parking so it will not disturb the regular guests. It also has a Chinese Restaurant which serves some fabulous Chinese cuisine . Panadura again is a new destination and we are proud to introduce it to the world!

We also celebrated the 20th Anniversary of Jetwing Lighthouse on the 7th of June this year. It was a memorable occasion and was heartening to see a Hotel that was introduced against all odds during the height of Sri Lanka’s dark days and when Galle was not a “Tourist” hot spot.

We are coming into the busy Summer months again and look forward to welcoming more visitors to our Island home.
