Sri Lanka Tailor-Made News – March 2018

Dear Friends,

With snow storms raging in most of Europe, UK and North East US, it seems even nature has resorted to being disruptive. The usual “fairly” predictable weather patterns are now a thing of the past. We now have to deal with another “unpredictable” factor in our lives. Amidst this we were able to conclude a very successful ITB (world’s largest tourism fair) in Berlin. Sri Lanka is a “hot” destination in the West and with a marketing campaign on the cards we are set to have a great year ahead.

It is heartening to see that Sri Lanka is now appealing to various segments of travelers, by age, country of origin, range of interest, etc. Our latest addition to the Hotel J brand in Unawatuna with simple, clean, efficient rooms as well as beds in the dormitory has gained popularity. Joining the first Hotel J in Negombo, these 2 properties now serve a clientele that do not wish to spend much in the accommodation but more on traveling within.

Our new venture Jetwing Adventures has also been busy handling biking and hiking tours. They also have excellent team building programs for groups. The latest event on their calendar is “Around the Pearl” (www.aroundthepearl.lk), a charity bike ride collecting funds for wheel chairs for children with cerebral palsy. This ride takes one around the country’s beautiful coastal belt which is extremely scenic. So, if any of you have the inclination please join from the 12th to the 22nd of April 2018.

Most of you may have heard about the unfortunate events that took place in Digana recently. Suffice to say that the situation was promptly brought under control. No tourist movements were affected adversely as all places of interest were kept open. We are thankful to all visitors for their patient understanding.

With warm regards

Shiromal Cooray

48 hours in the cultural triangle

I‘ve known some impressive rocks in my time. From the vertiginous expanses of the Grand Canyon to the geometric grandeur of the Giant’s Causeway; the scorched sandstone majesty of Uluru – or Ayers Rock – to perhaps that most famous rock of all: the dark and foreboding Alcatraz in San Francisco Bay. In fact, travellers are spoiled with fine examples of geology and history the world over, but then there’s Sigiriya in Sri Lanka.

LAKE LODGE BOUTIQUE HOTEL
Lake Lodge Kandalama is a small and exclusive 12 room hotel in the little village of Kandalama, in the heart of Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle. The village is dispersed around a 3000 acre man made body of water whose history dates back to over a 1000 years ago, to a highly agriculturally advanced civilization, and is part of an intricate irrigation network to thousands of acres of paddy cultivation that continues to function and flourish even today. Exploring the cultural triangle and its surrounding villages is like travelling through a time machine. Apart from the tarred roads and the telephone wires, life in this part of the world has remained the same for thousands of years
